St. Agnes Little Lamb Popcorn Snacks

I have seen this idea for sheep-themed birthday parties and thought it would make a nice and simple (and healthy) feast day snack idea of those saints associated with sheep or who have a sheep/lamb as a symbol. This week is the feast of St. Agnes (January 21), who is usually depicted holding a lamb to represent her virginity.

Fill small baggies with popcorn (not ziploc), tie the baggie closed, and tape on paper lamb head using this template or have your children draw their own.  I taped the corners to the back to make sure it retained the rounded shape. Could also just wrap in plastic wrap to make a round shape.

St. Bernadette (April 16)
St. Drogo (April 16)

*Looks like April 16 is a great day for sheep themed ideas with two different saints associated with sheep.

Marshmallow Lamb Cookies

The lamb, as a symbol of purity, is one of the symbols of St. Agnes. Every year on January 21st, the memorial of St. Agnes, the pope blesses two lambs that have been raised by Trappists of the Tre Fontane Monastery outside of Rome. After the lambs have been blessed they are taken to Benedictine nuns at the Monastery of St. Cecilia in Rome. Here the nuns care for them and use their wool to weave the palliums worn by the Pope and his Archbishops. The palliums are conferred on new archbishops (those appointed as archbishops during the preceding year) on the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul on June 29th.

"The palliums are about 3 inches wide and have a 14-inch strip hanging down the front and the back. The strips are finished with black silk, almost like the hooves of the sheep the archbishop is symbolically carrying over his shoulders." (CNS)

According to The Church's Year of Grace, "Our saint's name should be traced to the Greek hagne - the pure, rather than to the Latin agna - lamb. But the Latin derivation prevailed in the early Church. The reason may have been that eight days after her death Agnes appeared to her parents with a train of virgins, and a lamb at her side. St. Augustine knew both derivations. "Agnes", he writes, "means 'lamb' in Latin, but in Greek it denotes 'the pure one'."  (Catholic Culture)

Because of St. Agnes's association with lamb,  I made some quick and easy Marshmallow Lamb Cookies for the children to enjoy while coloring pictures and listening to a story about the life of St. Agnes in honor of her memorial.  These Marshmallow Lamb Cookies would also be perfect to make during the Easter season!

Marshmallow Lamb Cookies 

Adapted from Last Minute Mel

Ingredients:

• Graham Crackers
• Mini Marshmallows
• 1 T Confectioners Sugar (and a drop of milk to make icing)
• Raisins
• Food Marker

Directions: 

Using a serrated knife and a gentle sawing motion, cut the graham crackers to a somewhat oval shape.

Spread a thin layer of the powdered sugar icing over the top of the graham cracker and cover with marshmallows. 

Microwave on high for approximately 10 seconds.  Remove from microwave and gently push the marshmallows together and flatten slightly.

Add the raisin for the ear and draw in an eye.  Enjoy!

Celebrating Pentecost {and Link-Up!}

Come Holy Ghost, fill the hearts of Your faithful and kindle in them the fire of Your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

Tomorrow we celebrate Pentecost Sunday! Since Pentecost if the Birthday of the Church, our family always celebrates with a birthday cake! Our cake is a usually a white cake with white frosting since Pentecost is also known as Whitsunday. The large candle in center represents Christ our Light, who promised to send the Holy Ghost, and the 12 smaller white candles represent the 12 Apostle and the tongues of fire. The 7 red hearts represent the 7 gifts of the Holy Ghost, and the 12 strawberries, placed around the cake, represent the 12 fruits of the Holy Ghost.

After singing Happy Birthday to the Church, our kids blow out the candles with a "mighty wind."

One year, when I was short on time, I just picked up a white Cheesecake from Costco, along with some Strawberries, which was quick and easy! Red Velvet would also work nicely, as Robina has previously suggested.  Additional dessert ideas for Pentecost include Flames of Pentecost Cupcakes, Flaming Cupcakes for Pentecost, Pentecost Cupcakes, Pentecost Pie, and Holy Spirit Cheesecake.

In addition to dessert there are all sorts of other recipes that you could make for Pentecost in the archives.   Some of our favorites are a Twelve Fruit Salad and Seven Layer Bean Dip:

Last year our salad included: Kiwi, Red Raspberries, Black Raspberries, Strawberries, Watermelon, Red Grapes, Green Grapes, Cantaloupe, Pineapple, Peaches, Nectarines, and Apricots.

7 Layer Dip in honor of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit

Beans, Salsa, Sour Cream, Guacamole, Cheese, Green Onions & Olives

Since Pentecost is also known as "Whitsunday," one tradition is to serve white foods. Since Pentecost is also known as "Whitsunday," and one tradition is to serve white foods. Some ideas include powdered sugar doughnuts with white hot chocolate in the morning, and an afternoon snack of milk and Macaroons, and Cornish Game Hens (representing the Dove), Pasta Alfredo (white), and Cauliflower (white) for dinnertime.

You could also go with a "Red-Hot Theme" for dinner this year. Examples would include: fiery hot food, food cooked over flames, and any other food that is red. Perhaps even the Phoenix-Tailed Shrimp which happens to be one of the suggestions for the final Good Shepherd's Garden Party!

Holy Spirit Crackers for Pentecost Sunday are yet another fun treat for Pentecost!

The Good Shepherd's garden Party :: Week Six

The sixth week of Easter has just passed, which leaves just one last week as we celebrate the Easter season using The Garden of the Good Shepherd: A Sticker Calendar to Count the Fifty Days of Easter. Celebrating Easter ~ Share your pictures!

I hope you all had a very Happy Easter Sunday, and that you continue to have a blessed and joyous Easter Season!

For those of you with children, a couple years ago Charlotte and I put together plans for celebrating the 50 days of Easter with a weekly Good Shepherd Garden Party for our children and would love for you to join us!  The recipes and Bible readings for the first two weeks can be viewed and downloaded here and here, and you can also find all sorts of additional ideas by visiting everyone's past parties in the link-ups.  Charlotte has also illustrated a set of 50 printable symbols, for anyone that wasn't able to order a Sticker Calendar or, like my children, would like to color their own set, in addition to using the daily stickers!

Beginning next Monday (and continuing each Monday throughout the Easter season) we will post a link-up, here at Catholic Cuisine, for whoever would like to share the pictures from each week's Garden Party and/or other great feasts during the Easter season!

The Peacock is also an ancient Christian symbol of the Resurrection.  It was once believed that the flesh of the peacock never corrupts, so peacocks became the classic symbol of immortality, and representations of them are found on the tombs of ancient Christians as an expression of their hope to follow Christ in His defeat of death.
